                                                            Picture
                                                            _Inspired by the past . . .
                                                                                                      Picture your future!

Have you ever considered what St Albans might look like in ten or twenty years time? Do you care about the appearance of new buildings in the city? Have your ever admired new developments in other towns and cities and wished to see similar inspiring buildings in St Albans?

If the answer to any of these questions is YES, then now is the time to act. A group of local organisations, including the Civic Society, have asked the Prince’s Foundation to help in articulating specific design rules for new buildings and spaces in the City Centre. The Foundation are inviting the public to share ideas and images. The view is that local residents and city centre users know what looks best in St Albans!

The way to do this is to start taking pictures, and sharing your best images on Flickr. This website is open for submissions around the clock, until midnight on 22 Feb, and the images will go straight to the Princes Foundation. Participation by schools and from our younger citizens is actively encouraged.  Some photographic examples of our own can be found here.

Then come and join us at two Public Open Design Sessions. These will take place on Monday 27 Feb and Wednesday 29 Feb, 7-9pm, Dagnall Street Baptist Church, Upper Dagnall Street, St Albans AL3 5EE. If you would rather bring your pictures as print-outs to the meeting on 27 Feb, that would be fine too.

Picture what is typical, unique, weird and wonderful about the city. Look at the buildings, the public squares and spaces, activities, and that can be seen in the city. Look for features and design details you feel reflect best the identity of St Albans. Also, examples of what you don't want to see repeated.

What will happen after these meetings? With your help and inspiration, it is envisaged that the output of this process will become detailed local design guidance for the St Albans City Centre area. In due course it should be adopted by the Council.

The Prince’s Foundation involvement in the Look!StAlbans initiative is funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government as part of the nationwide ‘Communities and Neighbourhoods in Planning’ programme.
